Vathi

Vathi is the main town in the island of Ithaca. In 1953 Vathi was badly destroyed by an earthquake. Many areas have since been rebuilt and it is therefore not as “historic” as other places. The bay is sheltered all around in a picturesque setting and is surrounded by lemon and olive groves. Mooring lines are not available which is why the bow anchor has to be used. In the western part of the harbour basin you can moor south of the ferry dock, at the prominent quay in the south or at the jetties of the two taverns in the north-east. Around the ferry dock, the ships will give you a good shake when they come in and dock, and some of these ships are huge. At night and early in the morning, incoming and outbound ferries generate a high level of noise and a lot of swell. As the water depth declines rapidly, it is important to let out enough chain. The anchorage is partially overgrown with dense seaweed and it then only has a moderate holding. There are many shopping amenities, restaurants and scooter rentals around the harbour.
