Portoferraio overlooks a natural inlet protected from most winds, and it was this feature that made it one of the safest ports in the entire Mediterranean from the earliest times to the present. Arriving from the sea, one immediately catches a glimpse of the city rising above the roadstead, embracing it with its mighty and maj...
The Darsena Medicea is managed by the Cosimo de'Medici Society, based at the entrance to the harbor in front of the Gallo pier, in an excellent position to control the tourist landing, consisting of about sixty berths. The Medici marina offers numerous services and is equipped with water and electricity supply columns. Restrooms with public showers, which have been entirely redone, are located a short distance from the landing, next to the Town Hall.
At the gates of the new Millennium, the Medicean Dock Landing has been equipped with the specifications necessary for a modern port: staff, water, electricity, simplified and assisted mooring, and other services to best accommodate its guests.
Around the Darsena lives Portoferraio and its Centro Storico, which offers splendid views and a cheerful, lively atmosphere: bars, quaint restaurants, specialty stores and boutiques, and the traditional indoor market where you can stock up on provisions.
Must-see in the City: the Napoleonic residence of the Mills, the Archaeological Museum, the Foresiana Picture Gallery, the Misericordia Church, the Falcone and Stella Fortresses. All around the Island of Elba with its sea and the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago.
What I liked:
The port in the center of the town is definitely worth a stop. The marineros know their trade, are helpful and extremely friendly. The prices are okay given the central location.
What I didn't like:
Der Ort ist sehr lebendig, da Bars und Discos bis spät in die Nacht offen sind und die Menschen "La dolce vita " feiern. Aber deswegen kommt man ja auch hier her.
