The northernmost big island in the Aegean Sea is Thasos, which is separated from the mainland by a narrow strait. As the region is rarely driven by pleasure boats, there are only two ports in the capital Limenas Thasos on the north coast of the island.
The old port in the east of the city is mainly occupied by local yachts and pleasure boats, and only on the northern breakwater are few ber...
ths available. Here, however, underwater rocks complicate the docking and often not even the usual gangways help to bridge the distance the pier. There is also no electricity connection and water is only available at the south pier.
The new port was built immediately to the west of the old harbor and is well protected from any weather by two breakwaters. Docking is here alongside one of the two breakwaters but by the hydrofoil, which is on the east side of the harbor and constantly enters thus creating partly strong tides in the area. While there are electricity and water connections along the breakwater, these were not yet connected and water can be added only at the south pier.
Fuel is obtained on the waterfront or through a tank car that delivers directly on the pier. Since the entrance to the old port is limited, it is better to tank the fuel in the new port.
Shopping Near the harbor is a supermarket and the city center of Limenas Thasos has excellent shopping options to stock up on food, household goods or wine on tap.
Food and Leisure Around the harbor and in the city a variety of restaurants, taverns and bars have settled, although offering predominantly Greek cuisine but you could also find international cuisine on some menus. Limenas Thasos was built on the remains of an ancient city and the archaeological site of the ruins can be visited. These excavations are exhibited in the archaeological museum and the ancient theater in the city is still used for cultural events.
