Description

Kalamos is a small harbour in the island of the same name and lies on a hillside. It is especially popular with flotilla sailors. The anchorage is mainly a mixture of mud and sand and there is seaweed in some places. The anchor will hold, but it should be directed towards N-NE because of the prevailing winds and downbursts. It can get dangerous in the harbour when the wind blows from the NE or SE. Because the water depth is low, in some places even less than 1 m, it is recommended to anchor bow-to directly at the mole. The southern side of the harbour is very shallow where the water is less than 1 m deep. Watch out for the ferries when mooring and expect a swell. This cute and small village has modest shopping amenities as well as a few simple taverns. Kalamos seems tranquil and sleepy in the low season. In high season it is somewhat livelier but still noticeably quieter than e.g. Ormos Vlychon. The windmills in the south-west of Kalamos or the many ruins, e.g. Port Leone are popular hiking destinations. The George tavern takes the reservations for the harbour. George also helps with mooring.
